ASSESSING THE STATUS OF MICROFINANCE IN INDIA: A COMPREHENSIVE STUDY

Abstract

Microfinance has emerged as a powerful tool for poverty alleviation and financial inclusion in India. This study aims to assess the current status of microfinance in India by examining its outreach, sustainability, impact, and challenges. A comprehensive research design was employed, including data collection from multiple microfinance institutions (MFIs), interviews with key stakeholders, and analysis of secondary data. The findings reveal the significant progress made by the microfinance sector in reaching underserved populations, improving their livelihoods, and fostering economic development. However, challenges related to regulation, borrower indebtedness, and institutional sustainability persist. The study underscores the need for targeted policy interventions and innovation to enhance the effectiveness and inclusivity of microfinance in India.
