Mohamm Farhana Siddique , Professor, Institute of Education and Research, University of Dhaka

Abstract

Learning Analytics (LA) is a rapidly evolving field that involves the use of data to inform and enhance learning and teaching activities. One important application of LA is to support online discussion activities, which are a key component of many online courses. Learning Analytics dashboards are graphical user interfaces that present data to instructors and learners, providing insights into online discussion activities. This paper describes the development and evaluation of two Learning Analytics dashboards designed to support online discussion activities in a higher education context. The first dashboard focuses on providing instructors with insights into the quality of online discussion and the second dashboard provides learners with feedback on their contributions to online discussions. The evaluation of the dashboards involved a usability study with 12 instructors and 23 students. The results suggest that the dashboards are useful tools for supporting online discussion activities and that they can improve both the teaching and learning experiences in online courses.
