Relationship between Achievement Goal Orientation and Approaches to Learning
Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between achievement goal orientation and approaches to learning among undergraduate students. A sample of 200 students was taken from different faculties of a university in the United States. The Achievement Goal Questionnaire and Approaches to Learning and Studying Inventory were used to collect data. The findings revealed that students with a mastery goal orientation were more likely to adopt deep learning approaches, while those with a performance-approach goal orientation were more likely to adopt surface learning approaches. The study concludes that achievement goal orientation can have a significant impact on students' approaches to learning, which in turn can affect their academic performance
